In 2023, I authored the Guidelines to assist the Australian library sector with reparative and anti-racist description practices. The Guidelines premise understanding Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property. The Guidelines are intended for our library sector to update records, to make Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander materials more discoverable.
The project was a collaboration between five organisations: the Australian Library & Information Association (ALIA), National and State Libraries Australasia (NSLA), the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) and CAVAL.
The launch event gives some details of the Guidelines, with an introduction by Dr Marie-Louise Ayres, Director-General of the National Library of Australia, and a panel discussion with me, Damien Webb (State Library of New South Wales, NSLA, ALIA, IFLA), Michela Goodwin (National Library of Australia) and Anthony McLaughlin (AIATSIS) and facilitated by project co-lead Kathleen Smeaton (CAUL).
